Every field in the register

Field definitions

Every column in the published register, what it holds, and what its values mean. Counts are the number of records that carry a value for that field out of 28,678; a field is blank where the producing pass did not supply it, not because the value is zero.

Identity and provenance

assetId
The stable key for a record. Composed of its origin layer, the ISO3 country code and a hash of the country, sub-sector and normalised name. Use this to join across files.28,678 filled
layer
Which pass produced the record.A_g20_subsector - the G20 discovery pass, 19 nations across all 50 sub-sectors, scored. B_legacy_top100 - the earlier hand-curated top 100s, reclassified and rescored. C_global_top50 - the 196-nation top 50, scored in the second pass. D_official_designation - assets added from official or regulator-published designations. E_expansion - the national expansion towards 200 ranked assets per nation, scored as found. F_curation - the September 2026 curation pass: assets added where a large economy held fewer than 20 in a capability group, and the parts of records split because they bundled separate assets.28,678 filled
sourceLayers
Where a merged record's parts came from, when a duplicate spanned two layers.834 filled
scoringStatus
Whether the record carries rubric scores at all. Layer C does not.scored, unscored28,678 filled
mergedCount
How many original records were folded into this one, including itself.871 filled
mergedFrom
The assetIds absorbed into this record. Their removal is itemised in the merge ledger.871 filled

Place and country

iso3 / country
The nation the asset belongs to. Assets are attributed to the state that controls them, not the state they sit in, which is why Baikonur is Russian and marked accordingly.28,678 filled
region
The sub-national region, corridor or ocean the asset occupies. 'National' for network-level assets.28,678 filled
cityLocation
The nearest city or the principal node of a corridor.28,678 filled
latitude / longitude
Decimal degrees. For a network or corridor this is a representative node, not a centroid - read coordinatePrecision before mapping.19,426 filled
coordinatePrecision
How literally to take the point.site - the facility itself. city - the settlement. region - the area. representative - a nominal node standing for a network.18,889 filled
geometryType
The shape the asset really has, even where only a point is stored.point, line, polygon, network, system18,721 filled

Classification

capabilityGroupId / capabilityGroup
Level one of the taxonomy. Ten groups.28,678 filled
subSectorId / subSector
Level two. Fifty sub-sectors. This is the operative classification; the group is derived from it.28,183 filled
altSubSectors
Sub-sectors a merged duplicate had been filed under. Useful for finding classification disagreement.308 filled
subSectorBefore
Where the record sat before review moved it.22 filled
assetType
A free-text sub-type below the sub-sector, such as container_port or cable_landing_station. Not a controlled vocabulary.28,032 filled
assetSystem
The larger system the asset belongs to, where one applies - a mine's export chain, a national space programme.18,721 filled

Description and ownership

assetName
The asset's name. For reviewed records this is the common or official English name; nameBefore holds what it was called before.28,678 filled
altNames
Other names the asset is known by, including the names of records merged into it.2,065 filled
nameBefore
The name as generated, retained wherever review changed it.1,620 filled
owner / operator
Who owns it and who runs it. Often differ, and the difference is the point for sovereignty analysis.18,721 / 28,032 filled
publicPrivateStatus
The ownership class.public, private, mixed, state_owned_enterprise, foreign_owned, unknown18,721 filled
status
Operating state at the time of assessment.operational, under_construction, planned, damaged_or_idle, decommissioned28,032 filled
strategicRole
A short tag list of the roles the asset plays, drawn from a fixed vocabulary (energy, logistics, trade, sovereignty, defence and so on).19,367 filled
whyItMatters
One or two sentences on why the asset carries the weight it does. Written at assessment, not edited by review.28,678 filled

The five rubric dimensions

flowCriticality
Consequence of disruption to nationally important flows. 0 to 5.19,367 filled
geographicReach
Geographic scale of the asset's effects. 0 to 5.19,367 filled
systemicCentrality
Role as hub, backbone, gateway or control point. 0 to 5.19,367 filled
lowSubstitutability
Difficulty of replacing, bypassing or replicating it. 0 to 5. Named for its direction: 5 means hard to substitute.19,367 filled
economicThroughput
Scale of activity enabled or concentrated. 0 to 5.19,367 filled
strategicScore
The sum of the five, 0 to 25. Equally weighted by design in this version.19,367 filled
scoreBefore / scoreSetBy
The previous score and what changed it, wherever a score was revised after assessment.246 filled

Ranking

countryRank
Position in the nation's top 100, generated by letting every scored candidate compete on strategic score with no sector quotas. Blank outside the top 100.1,981 filled
subSectorRank
Position within its own country and sub-sector, 1 to 20, as assessed.18,721 filled

Evidence and review

evidenceConfidence
How well the specific named asset is documented. Deliberately independent of how important it is: an opaque state's chokepoint is high score and medium confidence, and that is the correct answer.high, medium, low, provisional28,678 filled
confidenceValue
The numeric form. high 0.90-1.00, medium 0.70-0.89, low 0.50-0.69, provisional below 0.50.19,367 filled
confidenceBefore
The label the record carried before review. Present on every reviewed record, and the gap between the two is the audit trail.2,167 filled
verified
True where the record has been through individual review - name, reference, coordinates, classification, score and confidence all checked. Absent means unreviewed, not wrong.2,167 filled
verificationStatus
Set only where review concluded the record is not a located asset at all but a category, programme, market activity or regulatory regime. These are excluded from the national top 100.not a discrete asset68 filled
verificationNote
One sentence from review: what was corrected, what remains doubtful, or which other record this overlaps.1,010 filled
reviewFlag
Marks a record that bundles more than one genuinely separate asset into a single line. These need splitting, which has not been done.109 filled
wikipediaTitle / wikipediaUrl
The English Wikipedia article for the asset, where one was established.1,585 filled
wikiRelation
How closely the article matches.exact - the article is about this asset. covers - the asset is substantively described inside a broader article, usually its operator's or its port's.1,585 filled

Joining the files

assetId is the key across every published file. The merge ledger maps each removed record to the one it merged into, so a historical id can always be resolved forward. The national top 100 file is a strict subset of the master, filtered on countryRank. The flagged-not-assets file is the 68 records review rejected, kept in the master so nothing disappears silently.

A field being filled is not the same as a field being checked. Only the 2,167 records with verified = true have had their names, references, coordinates, classification and scores examined individually. Everything else carries the assessment pass’s own values.
